Description

This happens on Windows XP. Firefox freezes when you receive a Facebook chat message.

Solution:

Enter "about:config" in the address bar, find the entry "javascript.options.jit.content" and change it from true to false by double clicking on it. Restart the browser, and the problem should be fixed. The problem seems to be the native-code compilation that Firefox recently added/enabled for JavaScript.
